WASHINGTON, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- A doll called Baby Alive being offered by Hasbro could be a holiday hit across the United States due to one specific ability -- it can do No. 2, an expert says.

"Sniff sniff," the doll proudly proclaims upon expelling a mixture of green beans and bananas fed it by the lucky child who gets one. "I made a stinky!"

Retail expert Reyne Rice said Baby Alive and its ability to mimic a bowel movement appears poised to become a major draw for young girls this year, The Washington Post reported Monday.

"Retailers have bought heavily into these dolls," the Toy Industry Association trend specialist said. "They feel that these are some of the more popular items for girls this year."

But the ability of the $59.99 doll, whose full name is Baby Alive Learns to Potty, has at least one critic concerned with its long-term implications to the industry.

"This is part of a greater trend to create toys that do everything," said Susan Lind, director of Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. "And in the process of marketing those toys to children and flooding the market with those toys, what we're doing is depriving children of opportunities for creative play."

The Post said Baby Alive is joined in its pseudo-toiletry games by Little Mommy Real Loving Baby Gotta Go Doll, a $39.95 Mattel doll that also mimics bowel movements.
