Sofa driver fights citations

CLEVELAND, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A Cleveland Browns fan noted for cruising between tailgate parties on his motorized couch has pleaded not guilty to sofa-related traffic violations.

Mike Meredith was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday after he was cited for driving an unregistered vehicle and having expired plates while cruising in his "Go-Kouch" Nov. 23 outside the Municipal Lot, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.

Meredith denies any wrongdoing, saying he was waived into the area by police officers. He said he has photos of the officers allowing him to enter with his vehicle, which was created from a riding lawn mower and a couch.

He said tailgaters pooled $500 to pay his tickets for him, but Meredith said he decided to fight the charges and donate the money to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Bride-to-be in wild carriage ride

LONDON, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A bride-to-be in Britain suffered minor head injuries and a sprained ankle when the horse pulling her carriage bolted shortly before the wedding.

Sophie Clarke, 29, was shoved out of the carriage by her father Robert, 56, who jumped out behind her as the horse and carriage careened on for two miles through the village of Blackminster, The Mirror reported.

"Something scared the horse -- maybe traffic," Sophie Clarke said. "It shook off the two men who were supposed to be driving it and careered straight over a railway crossing."

The bride-to-be, who has rescheduled her wedding for next month, said her full wedding dress, now ruined, cushioned her in the fall.

"I'm so grateful for what Dad did. It was a now or never situation -- and he called it right. I can't believe I'm still here," she told the Mirror, which reported the horse, too, suffered only minor injuries.

Capone statue stolen from British garden

ISLE OF SHEPPY, England, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A British woman said her family is offering an unspecified reward for the return of a life-size statue of Al Capone that disappeared from her yard.

Pauline McCook said the statue of the notorious gangster at her Isle of Sheppy, England, home was like "part of the family" and would be covered in decorations annually for Christmas, the BBC reported.

A police representative said the statue, which is believed to have been taken between Dec. 1 and Dec. 10, was "an extremely unusual item to steal." Police said the "extremely heavy" fiberglass statue would have required more than one person to move and the thieves would have required a vehicle for transport.
