172 grandchildren gather for funeral
SALFORD, England, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- The funeral of Maggie Ward in Salford, England, drew a sizeable crowd -- including her 172 grandchildren -- the family said.
It was the first time all 172 -- ranging in age from 11 to 51 -- had gathered together in one place. Family members said Ward's funeral Wednesday was also attended by the 12 surviving children of Ward's original brood of 15, as well as her 36 great grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren, The Daily Mail reported.
"She would never forget a birthday and got everyone a present at Christmas," Ward's daughter, Anne Hudson, said of her mother, who died at 87. "She bought presents all year round -- she would go to markets to get gifts so she could afford something for everyone.
"She was tough but she had to be to keep us all in line. She was very proud of her family."
Woman held after going to plane for toys
LONDON, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A London teacher said she was detained for several hours at a city airport after she attempted to return to a plane for her daughter's toys.
Emma Goldman, 45, said she "impulsively" tried to return to the plane to retrieve her daughter's toys moments after arriving at Gatwick Airport on a flight from Venice and accidentally tripped three security seals on doors between the terminal concourse and the jet, The Daily Mail reported.
Goldman said she was swarmed by armed police.
"I wasn't scared because I thought they'd realize it was just a misunderstanding, I tried to wave it off and apologize," she said. "But they took me downstairs and there was this van with a horrible cage inside. They opened the back doors and my heart started racing -- that's when I felt really scared."
Goldman said she was held for several hours before questioning. She said police wanted to drop her case, but the Crown Prosecution Service insisted on pursing charges of criminal damage and entering a restricted zone of an airport without permission.
She admitted to the charges and was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay $40 to replace the plastic covers on the security alarms she tripped and $120 in fines.
Record: 42 kisses in 30 seconds
LONDON, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A British woman set a world record by kissing 42 men within a 30-second time limit with a Guinness Book of Records official as her witness.
Ruth Reynolds, 24, performed the feat, which topped the previous record of 36 kisses inside of a minute, with official adjudicator Karolina Thelin and Guinness Book of Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday on hand, The Sun reported.
"I was quietly confident I would break the record -- but I'm delighted that I broke it by so much," Reynolds said. "It was actually a lot of fun. I kissed more men in a minute than in my whole life to date!"
Volunteer Laurence Aronberg, 30, said the record was not the first to include him.
"I helped set the record for the number of people on a bus last year. This was much more fun," he said.
Scorpions found at British film studio
IVER HEATH, England, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Two scorpions were found wandering the premises at the Pinewood film and television studios in Iver Heath, England, a studio spokesman said.
Pest controllers were called after the scorpions -- which are believed to have hitched a ride with some studio equipment from an overseas film shoot -- were spotted Friday, The Daily Telegraph reported.
"Nobody was in any danger and we are satisfied that the situation has been dealt with," the studio spokesman said.
He said one of the scorpions was caught alive and turned over to animal quarantine officers at London's Heathrow Airport. He did not say what became of the second scorpion.
"The scorpions have not hit any productions. They were small and we have been told they were 'sub-adult' scorpions," the spokesman said. "They were probably cold and miserable after finding themselves in Britain. It is thought that they hitched a lift from a location where a production was filming."
