HANOVER, N.H., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- A college student from Montana won as a Democrat in New Hampshire this year, ousting the incumbent Grafton County treasurer.
Vanessa Sievers, a junior at Dartmouth College, beat Carol Elliott by 586 votes out of more than 40,000 cast, The New York Times reported. Elliott, a Republican, was town clerk in Plymouth for 18 years before becoming county registrar of deeds and then treasurer.
Elliott told the Valley News that Sievers is a "teenybopper" supported by "brain-washed college students."
"I look back over my years of service very proudly, and I'm glad I had the chance to serve the public while New Hampshire was New Hampshire," she said.
Sievers attributed her victory to a better use of new media. She told the Times her only campaign expense was $51 for an ad on Facebook.
Despite her youth, Sievers said she already has political experience as a school board member in Livingston, Mont. She starts her new part-time job in January.
