MIAMI, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- A group of former Boy Scouts kept alive a tradition begun in 1969 by impaling a pumpkin atop North Miami Library's steeple on Halloween.

"I think we all feared that it would drift away like so many other things, but it seems to me there is a new energy," City Councilman Scott Galvin, an admirer of the prank, told The Miami Herald.

Former members of Boy Scout Troop 42 say they've recruited some newer, younger blood to help them reach the steeple as anonymously as possible and keep the tradition going.

"Never in a million years did we think the stupid little prank that we came up with would turn into this," said "Lt. Col. Yeti P. Sasquatch," a member of the original troop who used the fictitious name to conceal his identity.

This year, the impaled pumpkin had a sad face in memory of an original troop member known publicly only as "Sgt. Skeeter," who recently died of cancer, the Herald reported.
