NEWENT, England, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Police in Newent, England, said two men have admitted they stole equipment from a police station that they found unlocked.

Shane Bowkett, 22, and Matthew Goodchild, 21, pleaded guilty to burglary, admitting they entered the police station after they had been drinking Aug. 23. They stole two stab vests, two high-visibility jackets, two police caps and the key to a patrol car after discovering the station was unlocked and unoccupied, The Daily Mail reported Monday.

Bowkett and Goodchild told investigators they had gone to the station because they believed Goodchild's brother had been taken there after being arrested.

Police said all of the missing items were recovered.

"On this occasion the station had been left insecure due to a fault with the door and the offenders gained access into the building," a police spokesman said. "We have now reviewed the security of this station and will be making sure that an incident like this doesn't happen again."

Both suspects received a conditional 12-month discharge and they were each fined $60.
