Judge bars toenail evidence from trial
MILWAUKEE, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A judge in Wisconsin barred a disbarred lawyer from submitting one of his toenails as evidence in his trial on charges of child molesting and pornography.
Joseph Hallows, 70, of Wauwatosa, argued the toenail was evidence he could not have walked into a state forest 17 years ago with a 13-year-old boy, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. The boy, now an adult, testified about the alleged assault.
Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Pauline McMahon found Monday that the toenail and photographs of Hallows' legs now show nothing about his physical condition at the time of the alleged assault.
Hallows, 70, son of a former state Supreme Court justice, is representing himself in the trial. On Monday, he testified in his own defense.
In a bizarre scene, Hallows sat in the witness box, chained to the floor, while he asked himself questions and then answered them. He told himself and the jury he is a "very sexual person" but not "obsessed with sex."
Site uses e-cards to encourage STD testing
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A San Francisco group says more than 50,000 people have sent e-cards through its Web site to tell sexual partners they should get tested for diseases.
The site, inSpot.org, said more than 50,000 people have used the free service, which sends anonymous e-cards to notify past sexual partners that they should get tested for sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, syphilis and the human immunodeficiency virus, the disease that causes AIDS, CNN reported Tuesday.
The Web site is operated by a non-profit organization, Internet Sexuality Information Services.
Experts said that while the e-card notifications may seem insensitive, they are better than no notifications at all.
"When you weigh the importance of getting people notified, that's ultimately what needs to be done," said Jeffrey Klausner, director of STD Prevention and Control Services at the California Department of Public Health in San Francisco. "By notifying them -- even if it's done anonymously, even distantly, even with an e-card -- the benefits of getting someone diagnosed and treated outweigh the concerns of insensitivity."
Prisoner caught with pot in stomach fat
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A prisoner awaiting trial at a Florida prison is facing additional charges after guards found marijuana hidden in his stomach rolls, police said.
Authorities said Cedric Webb, 25, who was arrested in May and charged with possession of cocaine and forgery, now faces additional charges of introduction of contraband into a detention facility and possession of marijuana after guards searching the prisoner for contraband at the Montgomery Correctional Center in Jacksonville found him attempting to hide marijuana in the folds of his stomach, WKMG-TV in Orlando reported Tuesday.
The police report said two bags of marijuana and tobacco were found tucked into the stomach fat of the prisoner, who was described as weighing 290 pounds with a "heavy" build.
