PROVO, Utah, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- A Brigham Young student says he has been stripped of his Utah church membership and denied his degree for selling a calendar of shirtless Mormon missionaries.

Chad Hardy completed his course work for his degree and took part in an August commencement ceremony. But he told the Deseret Morning News he received a letter Sept. 30 telling him he had been deleted from the graduation list and would not be conferred a degree. A university spokeswoman confirmed BYU has not granted Hardy a diploma, the newspaper reported Monday.

The letter told Hardy his degree is on hold because his excommunication from the Church of Latter Day Saints left him in violation of the school's honor code. The church owns and operates the school.

Hardy, who had not been active in the church for six years, marketed the "Men on a Mission" calender featuring Mormons who had completed their church missions. The 2008 edition sold nearly 10,000 copies, and the 2009 version went out in September, the newspaper said.
