NEW YORK, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- A New York woman says she is demanding a $10 million buyout for the rent-controlled studio apartment above Carnegie Hall that has been her home since 1949.

Editta Sherman, 96, who pays $530 a month for the 800-square-foot apartment, is one of six rent-controlled tenants who have yet to vacate the Studio Towers of Carnegie Hall, which the venue plans to renovate into rehearsal, office and classroom space as part of a $150 million overhaul, the New York Post reported Monday.

Some tenants said they have resigned themselves to eventually leaving their apartments after a lawsuit filed by the six remaining tenants failed to convince the court to let them stay. However, Sherman said she will not leave her apartment with a $10 million payout and a guarantee of a new home.

"They'll have to pay and find me a small place. I'm 96 years old," Sherman said.

Carnegie Hall spokeswoman Synneve Carlino would not discuss any buyouts, but she said the facility is dedicated to relocating the tenants "to equivalent or superior apartments in the neighborhood, paying any differential in their rent for the remainder of their lives."
