NEW YORK, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Officials with a Jewish museum in New York said they expect their latest exhibit, which includes 49 sculptures of oversized noses, to attract controversy.
The schnoz sculptures at Spertus Museum are part of a collection of contemporary artwork, film and memorabilia aimed at exploring how stereotypes can shape identities and further prejudice, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.
"I think some people will be offended," said Beth Gelman, director of education at Spertus.
She said the museum hopes those who are offended will take time to think about the installations, which each have three parts: A common stereotype, a cultural source that adopts the stereotype or has some anti-Semitic meaning and finally a contemporary response to the stereotype.
"Sometimes it's hard to learn because learning questions our assumptions," Gelman said.
Spertus curator Rhoda Rosen said: "My mandate is to explore themes within the Jewish experience that are challenging in a way that is intellectually rigorous."
