JAKARTA, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Indonesian lawmakers debating the country's controversial pornography bill said the legislation will not bar tourists from wearing bikinis at popular resorts.

Members of the Indonesian House of Representatives' special committee discussing the bill said lawmakers are working to ensure the bill does not have a negative effect on tourism, the Jakarta Post reported Friday.

"Tourists are allowed to wear bikinis in tourism resorts like Bali and Parang Tritis beach (in Yogyakarta). The porn bill will treat recreational and leisure areas differently," said House member Husein Abdul Azis of the country's Democratic Party.

Fears had previously been raised that a provision in the bill requiring "appropriate" clothing in public places would negatively affect tourism by banning bikinis.

Balkan Kaplale, head of the committee and a member of the Golkar Party, said several compromises have been made to smooth over some of the more contentious areas of the bill.

"I can say there have been drastic changes in the bill," he said.
