Man allegedly offered pot for McD's food

VERO BEACH, Fla., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Authorities have accused a drive-through customer at a Vero Beach, Fla., McDonald's fast-food restaurant of attempting to pay for his meal with marijuana.

The Indian River County Sheriff's Office said it received a call at 12:22 a.m. Monday from a McDonald's cashier who claimed Shawn Alexander Pannullo, 27, had attempted to trade marijuana for food, TCPalm.com reported Tuesday.

A deputy recognized Pannullo's vehicle from the cashier's description and allegedly discovered a quantity of marijuana inside, the arrest affidavit stated.

Pannullo, who was charged with possession of cannabis, was released Monday after posting $500 bail.

Court bans caterer for cooking near corpse

WOLVERHAMPTON, England, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- City magistrates in Wolverhampton, England, have fined a former catering company boss for cooking with a dead body nearby.

Jaswinder Singh, 45, was fined about $6,700 and banned from managing any food businesses after police officers responding to reports of a worker's sudden death Aug. 27 at the Pappu Sweet Center found Singh continuing to cook kebabs with the corpse sprawled out on a sofa just feet away from the food, The Sun reported Tuesday.

Authorities said a dead rat also was found under a cooking pot on the premises and rat droppings were discovered during a health inspection. Inspectors said they witnessed employees spitting and smoking in food preparation areas.

"The city council will not tolerate premises who put the public at risk by preparing food in insanitary conditions," said Barry Findlay, Wolverhampton City Council cabinet member for the environment. "We are pleased that the council's actions have resulted in the courts banning this individual from ever running a food business again."

Sunbathers warned not to display digits

SYDNEY, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- An Australian activist has warned teenage girls in the country to refrain from writing their phone numbers on their backs while sunbathing.

Girls, ages 14 and 15, have been spotted sunbathing at Sydney beaches with their phone numbers written on their backs in blue zinc cream in what they described as an attempt to meet boys, the Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

Concerned adult Nikki Goldstein said it is dangerous for girls to display their "phone number on the Internet or anywhere that could make them a target."

"They're in their bikinis, showing off their bodies, objectifying themselves in a way that is, to my mind, a bit trashy," Goldstein said.

One of the sunbathing girls, Lizzy, 15, said the plan she hatched with her friends to meet boys has already backfired in a menacing way.

"An old guy tried to talk to me. He was trying to take pictures of us," she said.

Police detain wrong man with right name

LONDON, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Court officials in Lincoln, England, say a man was mistakenly detained for three days because he has the same name as a wanted man.

Andrew Carpenter, 49, was arrested after officers spoke to him Friday and found his name in a police database that claimed an Andrew Carpenter from Boston, England, was wanted for failure to supply information when caught speeding, the Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

Richard Marshall, attorney for the incorrectly incarcerated Carpenter, said his client was arrested despite his protestations and the warrant's lack of a birth date for the wanted man.

"The warrant did not have the date of birth and he had never been to Lincoln or Boston in his life. It's ridiculous," Marshall said.

Carpenter was held for three days and transported 160 miles from his home in Slough, England, before court officials realized he was not the right man.

"The system has failed as far as you are concerned, and I apologize," District Judge Richard Blake told Carpenter.

Carpenter, who was released without charge, said he may seek legal action against the authorities.
