WINCHBURGH, Scotland, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- A cow wandered onto a highway in Scotland, causing a five-car pileup, officials say.

The traffic mess the wayward bovine created in West Lothian produced no serious injuries to any of the people involved but the cow died at the scene, The Scotsman reported Wednesday.

"The people had a pretty lucky escape. Unfortunately the animal did not," said Sgt. David Gray of the Lothian and Borders Police.

The newspaper reported that as the first vehicle dodged the cow, it collided with another car, setting off a chain reaction that ended with five cars damaged.

Eleven firefighters reportedly were called to the scene at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
