TORONTO, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Toronto highways were busy as usual even though Monday was its eighth annual "Car Free Day," police said.

While a few extra passengers seemed to have jumped on board public transit, Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford said he couldn't tell any difference on roadways and didn't think commuters had gotten the word.

"I just heard it this morning. I was already in the car," he told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., adding he thought that was probably the case for many folks.

Ed Shea, who handles corporate communications for Go Transit, begged to differ.

"Yes, there seems to be more people riding Go trains and buses today," he said.

About 1,500 communities marked the day to raise awareness about the environmental implications of driving motorized vehicles.

Toronto Mayor David Miller launched Monday's downtown festivities, spearheaded by the Sierra Club, which featured live music and displays on sustainable and alternative transportation.

Several downtown streets were closed to traffic in Montreal in an attempt to nudge people to leave their cars at home.
