TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A Florida national guardsman has been sentenced to 18 months probation for stealing a Stinger missile-firing simulator to use as a "garage ornament."

Scott Howarth, 21, pleaded guilty in May to theft of government property, as part of a plea agreement that also requires him to undergo a mental health evaluation, the Tampa (Fla.) Tribune reported Thursday.

Federal court Judge Susan Bucklew said during sentencing Wednesday that Howarth will be eligible for early termination of probation in 12 months.

Howarth told the judge before she pronounced the sentence that he had made "a very stupid and foolish mistake" when he took the $37,000 simulator home from Fort Stewart in October. He said he took the item because he thought it would make an attractive "garage ornament."

The guardsman returned the item to authorities undamaged.
