Parents worried by golf course near school

CINCINNATI , Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Parents of students at a Cincinnati elementary school are calling on a nearby golf course to take action to prevent kids from being hit by wayward balls.

The parents said golf balls have been flying over the fence of the Ridge Club and landing close enough to the Pleasant Ridge Montessori school playground to cause concern for the safety of their children, WLWT-TV, Cincinnati, reported Thursday.

"It's nothing that I think anyone is in imminent danger, but you never know and we don't want to take that chance," Principal Maria Lagdameo said.

The golf course refused Lagdameo's request to shut down the driving range during school hours, citing an agreement signed two years ago with Cincinnati Public Schools that prevents the course from being held responsible for damage caused by poorly struck golf balls.

CPS said it will cost about $25,000 to install a net to catch the golf balls. Some parents expressed anger that the golf course is refusing to help.

"We have to give our children free lunches so they can study and a golf course cannot put up a net to keep our children safe," Parent-Teacher Organization co-president Ruth Anne Wolfe.
