WIVETON, England, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Officials in Norfolk, England, aren't shy about using their regional dialect, posting "Slow You Down" road signs.

The signs were placed outside of the picturesque village of Wiveton in northern Norfolk, and are meant to catch the attention of speeders who have careened into numerous accidents on the winding road into town, the Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday.

Godfrey Sayers, chairman of the parish council, told the newspaper that most road signs in Norfolk don't say anything about their communities and didn't give them an individual look.

"We wanted something a bit different and wanted to make drivers think," he said. "I remembered seeing something similar in another village in Norfolk, and we decided to do the 'Slow You Down' signs."

The Telegraph says the signs are being praised by language campaigners who are keen to preserve Norfolk's vernacular tongue.
