NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- A New York buggy driver said his horses became spooked on his way to pick up a bride-to-be and stampeded through traffic.

The driver, a Valentine Carriage employee who declined to give his name, said a wooden bar under the buggy snapped and slapped one of the two horses pulling the wedding buggy in the rear, sending both equines into a gallop, the New York Post reported Monday.

"I held onto the reins with my body off the side," the driver said. "I tried to slow them down."

The horses trampled over a car before the driver was able to bring them to a stop by steering the buggy into a telephone pole.

"My only choice was to direct the horses in a direction that could prevent someone from getting hurt," he said.

The driver said he hit his face during the incident but was otherwise uninjured. The horses suffered only minor scrapes and bruises to their legs.

The driver said he said he did not know what caused the wooden bar to break.
