PLANO, Texas, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- The U.S. Census Bureau's report on income and poverty found Plano, Texas, to be the nation's most affluent city -- a result that surprised even the mayor.

The annual report, released Tuesday, said the Dallas suburb, which has a population of about 260,000, had the lowest poverty rate and highest income among cities with populations of more than 250,000, ABC News reported Friday.

"I'd never heard that before," Plano Mayor Pat Evans said. "But it's good to know."

The report said the median household income in Plano during 2007 was $84,492, a 10-percent increase from 2006. San Jose, Calif., came in second in the report with a median income of $76,963.

"We've got the lowest taxes and highest level of services in North Texas," Evans told aBC News

The report named Detroit as the poorest city in the United States, with a median household income of $28,097, beating out last year's poorest city, Cleveland.
