More over-60s divorcing in Britain

LONDON, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- British figures show divorce is on the rise for the country's over-60 population, spiking by more than one- third in the past 10 years.

Data from the Office for National Statistics indicate that 13,678 British over-60s sought to end their marriages in 2007, an increase from 12,636 in 2006 and a sharp escalation from 9,052 in 1997, The Telegraph reported Friday.

Experts said the rise may be partially due to couples remaining together for their children and then divorcing once their offspring have left home.

"Sixty is the new 50 as people live longer, and the desire for independence and change is perhaps greater, there may be a need to cash in at that point rather than become a carer," said Sandra Davis, head of family at law firm Mishcon de Reya.

"People have to spend more time together and the differences that are not apparent when one or both spouses are working are much more apparent when they are retired and forced to spend more time together," Davis said.

Davis said recent documented rises in divorce settlements may also be driving many women to end unhappy marriages.
