Firefighters cope with baby boom

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Firefighters around Rochester, N.Y., delivered three babies within a few hours, with all of the births taking place in cars.

One mom, Carrie Sippel, was being driven to the hospital by her mother, Mary Scholl, when she realized the baby was on its way. Scholl quickly pulled into a parking lot at the Egypt Fire Station, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports.

Madison Sippel was born 15 minutes later in Scholl's Chevy Malibu.

Alex Klimchuck, a veteran firefighter-EMT, said this was his first delivery. He told the newspaper that ambulance crews are more likely to assist at births.

Sippel described Klimchuck as calm and reassuring.

"Everybody did absolutely wonderful," she said. "By the time I got to the hospital, all I had to do was paperwork."

A couple of hours earlier, firefighters in Brighton helped a woman in labor who was pulled over to the roadside.

Details of the third birth in the city of Rochester were not available.
