BARNSTABLE, Mass., Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Massachusetts officials said online auctions for unique low-numbered license plates brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Cape and Islands License Plate Committee Chairman Paul Romul said officials are "elated with the results" of the auction, which featured a No. "1" license plate being sold for $147,000 and a No. "4" plate bringing in $35,500, WCVB-TV, Boston, reported Monday.
"We always knew the plates were popular and that so many Massachusetts residents feel a special connection to the Cape and Islands. I think this affirms it," Romul said.
Officials said proceeds from the online auctions went toward Massachusetts non-profits including the Lower Cape Cod Community Development Corp., the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, Barnstable County's Economic Development Council and the Cape Cod Baseball League.
