LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- There are nearly 60,000 registered Chihuahuas living in Los Angeles County, making the smalls pups the most popular breed in the area, records indicate.

An online database put together by the Los Angles Times, called "L.A.'s Top Dogs," contains statistics on hundreds of thousands of canines in Los Angeles County, the newspaper said.

Officials say the database holds records on less than half the dogs living in the county because a large number of people fail to register their pets.

The database says Chihuahuas, Labradors and pit bulls are the most popular breeds in the county. There are 59,684 registered Chihuahuas, 58,071 labs and 20,851 American pit bull terriers, the Times reported Friday.

Statistics show at least 1,262 of the county's Chihuahuas go by the name Princess.
