WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., July 28 (UPI) -- An expert at Indiana's Purdue University said tourists can make a good impression in China by learning about the local customs before they leave home.
Wei Hong, a Chinese professor and Hangzhou, China, native, helped get 11 college students and graduates ready for a visit to China, where they will be interning at the Olympic Games in August, Purdue University said.
"People in China are very friendly and welcoming. When you meet someone, smile, say 'Ni-Hao,' and shake hands," Hong said.
Hong said a good way to impress people in China is to carry business cards with Chinese translation.
"You never know who you will meet in China, plus it is a great conversation starter," she added.
Hong also said visitors should not be afraid to tell a restaurant server or host they are full, as it is customary in China to refill a diner's plate automatically.
