NEWARK-ON-TRENT, England, July 26 (UPI) -- Two British men were sent to prison for taking part in a failed plot to kidnap one of their ex-girlfriends using a voice-changing device, officials said.

James Wakefield, 28, planned to give his friend, Aaron Rawson, 21, nearly $40,000 to kidnap his ex-girlfriend, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

Wakefield told authorities he planned to have Rawson kidnap his ex-flame so he could show up and rescue her to win back her love.

The plan entailed Rawson abducting the girl from her Newark, England, home and taking her to a wooded area while wearing a Dalek voice-changer helmet to disguise himself.

Rawson attempted waiting for the girl at her home twice, but was scared away by his surroundings, the newspaper said.

Wakefield denied his involvement in the plot, but was convicted of conspiracy to kidnap and given a 14-month prison sentence, documents indicate.

The Telegraph said Rawson confessed to a charge of conspiracy to kidnap and received a 9-month jail sentence suspended for 18 months.
