Parking employee spots own stolen car

STOCKTON, Calif., July 23 (UPI) -- A security guard at a Stockton, Calif., parking lot said a car stolen from him three years ago has been returned after the alleged thief brought it to his lot.

Rakesh Singh said he would have spotted his Mustang 5.0 anywhere, especially in his own parking lot, KOVR-TV, Sacramento, Calif., reported Wednesday.

"I had it for 12 years before they stole it, so it's like a baby with a scar," Singh said. "I was like, 'That's mine.'"

"The little curb bump, it leans the same way, the mud flaps are the same," he said.

Singh said he phoned police after the man brought the car to the lot went into a restaurant.

"We hid in the back," Singh said. "It was so cool."

Alan Hernandez was arrested for allegedly stealing Singh's car.

Pastor injured during motorcycle sermon

KOKOMO, Ind., July 23 (UPI) -- A Kokomo, Ind., pastor said a sermon didn't necessarily go wrong when he plunged into the pews on a motorcycle -- it just went differently.

Pastor Jeff Harlow said he was giving a sermon on "becoming one" and was using motocross videos as an example of how riders "become one" with their motorcycles before he attempted to ride out onto the pulpit from behind a curtain, the Kokomo Tribune reported Wednesday.

Instead, Harlow and his bike plunged into the first row of pews, causing the pastor to suffer a broken wrist and laceration to the head. However, he said the accident was a perfect illustration of his sermon.

"Relations don't come easy," he said after the incident. "It takes time and effort. I proved it with crystal clarity. I was not one with the motorcycle."

Harlow explained that the throttle was more sensitive than he was expecting and he lost control of the bike. He said he was thankful no one else was hurt -- especially since the pew he hit was where his wife usually sits.

"Our eyes locked as I was coming off the platform," he said. "She leaned one way and I leaned the other. I was hoping I didn't hurt anyone but me. It was a scary moment. I was immediately embarrassed."

Drunken elk shot after attacking tot

KUNGALV, Sweden, July 23 (UPI) -- Hunters in Kungalv, Sweden, said they have killed a drunken elk that earlier in the day attacked a 3-year-old girl.

Maria Schelin said her young daughter, Nova, was playing in her backyard sandbox when the young elk calf, which had apparently become intoxicated by eating yeasted apples, approached the toddler aggressively, Swedish news agency TT reported Wednesday.

"It bit me on the arm," Nova said after the confrontation.

Schelin said she reacted quickly to rescue her child.

"I suddenly heard a loud scream. I threw myself over the hedge, grabbed Nova and ran back into the house," she said..

The elk was shot by a group of hunters when it returned to the area later in the day. Residents said they did not want to take any chances with the beast after it attacked the toddler.

British villagers denounce garbage rules

LITHERSKEW, England, July 23 (UPI) -- Residents of a British hamlet say a requirement that they push their trash-holding "wheelie bins" 1 1/2 miles to a nearby town is rubbish.

Complaints have been pouring in to the Richmondshire District Council from residents of Litherskew, England, who have been told they must wheel their garbage to the town of Sedbusk for collection, The Times of London reported Wednesday. The alternative, they said, is to transport the trash by car.

Resident Alice Amsden told the newspaper: "We have to pile our rubbish bags into the Land Rover and take it down to the bin, but not everyone wants to share their car with a week's worth of rubbish."

A spokesman for the district council said Litherskew's complaints would be investigated and new arrangements would be considered in September.
