MONROE, Wash., July 22 (UPI) -- Police in Monroe, Wash., said they arrested two burglary suspects after a trail of dropped merchandise led them to the two men sleeping with the stolen goods.
Investigators said they followed a trail of pillows, backpacks and empty boxes from the burgled Fred Meyer store to a grassy area about 200 feet from the store, the Everett (Wash.) Herald reported Tuesday.
"The officer just keeps following the trail, and there they are, asleep on top of pillows and pads," Monroe police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said. "They are sound asleep."
Willis said the officer called for backup and bagan taking pictures of the suspects, identified as Kyle Burress, 25, and Allen Pierce, 27. Once a sergeant arrived at the scene, police woke the two men up and read them their rights. They were charged with second-degree burglary and taken to the Snohomish County Jail.
"We believe alcohol was involved," Willis said. "I'd say a lot of alcohol was involved."
