SPRINGFIELD, Mass., July 22 (UPI) -- Gun maker Smith & Wesson says it will manufacture a special commemorative handgun to celebrate a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the Second Amendment.

The high court's June 26 decision struck down a District of Columbia handgun ban, and for the first time said the Second Amendment's phrase "right to bear arms" applied to individual gun owners. To celebrate, the Springfield, Mass., company will make a commemorative Model 442 revolver, The Boston Herald reported Tuesday.

Smith & Wesson officials said they would give the commemorative gun to each of the six plaintiffs in the case, including lead plaintiff Dick Heller, a security guard who has emerged as a hero to gun rights advocates, the newspaper said.
