GRIFFIN, Ga., July 14 (UPI) -- Georgia wildlife authorities say they are trying to figure out how six shark corpses ended up on the side of a road in a rural area of Spalding County.

Motorists said they were shocked to find the dead sharks Sunday near Griffin, Ga., WGCL-TV, Atlanta reported Monday.

"I thought they looked like sharks, but I can't freaking believe it," resident Kara Davel said. "I think it's disgusting. People actually dump a lot of trash on this road."

Wildlife officials said they suspect the sharks died shortly before they were spotted.

Shark hunting is against Georgia laws and could result in a $100,000 fine, WGCL said.

Authorities said the sharks found Sunday were all missing their teeth and whoever killed them cracked the creatures' jaws.

Officials said whether or not they begin investigating the incident depends on what species of sharks they are found to be.
