FORT SCOTT, Kan., July 11 (UPI) -- Residents of Fort Scott, Kan., say they are thrilled the town made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for laying a mile of pennies in 143 minutes.

The town's Youth Activities Team joined with locals Thursday to beat a penny-laying record set Feb. 24 by a school in Rickmansworth, England, the Fort Scott (Kan.) Tribune reported.

Students and teachers at the British school held the previous record for laying a mile of pennies in 144 minutes and 15 seconds.

"I'm so proud of this entire town," YAT Co-convener Diana Mitchell said. "What a great day to be living in Fort Scott."

Ambitious YAT members say they are attempting to break another world record this week by laying the longest chain of pennies, which they hope will stretch 40 miles.
