Police nab suspect in his skivvies
HARTFORD, Wis., July 11 (UPI) -- Police in Hartford, Wis., said they have arrested a man who allegedly ditched his clothes after a robbery to make a getaway wearing only his underwear.
Police said the 37-year-old man, whose name was not released, robbed a convenience store with a fake handgun after purchasing a pack of cigarettes, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
The robber wore a pair of blue coveralls, but police said they discovered him riding a bicycle wearing only his underwear -- with the unopened pack of cigarettes and $412, the exact amount taken from the store, stuffed inside.
In between the store and bike path where police found the man, officers discovered a pair of blue coveralls and a fake handgun. Police said the suspect told them he was robbed by a man who only wanted his clothing and let him keep the money.
Prosecutors said the suspect, who was being held in Washington County Jail, was expected to be charged with armed robbery.
Teen bound for N.C. makes Sacramento
SAN ANTONIO, July 11 (UPI) -- A 16-year-old San Antonio girl's mother said the teen inadvertently wound up in California after she was supposed to board a flight to Raleigh, N.C.
Sondra Burney said her daughter, Morgan, boarded what she thought was an ExpressJet Airlines flight to Raleigh for a visit with her grandmother, but discovered she had gotten on the wrong plane after the jet arrived in Sacramento, KSAT-TV, San Antonio, reported.
"She found out after she arrived and after she talked to her grandmother that she was in California and had no idea," Burney said.
ExpressJet Airlines said it was investigating how the teenager ended up on the wrong plane. It said she was flown to North Carolina free of charge and given a voucher for a free flight.
However, she doesn't have much time to use it -- the airline said Wednesday it will cease operations in September.
Mister Softee: Knockoffs playing our song
TRENTON, N.J., July 11 (UPI) -- Mister Softee, the New Jersey company known for its roving ice cream trucks, has sued three alleged impostors who used its trademark music.
Jim Conway Jr., son of the company's founder, said he initiated the legal action after he heard the song coming from a strange truck in Newark, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported. Danny's Soft-Serve, the truck he spotted, is one of three defendants named in the suit.
Mister Softee, founded in 1956, franchises more than 600 trucks, including two in China. Conway said the company is known for its high standards.
"It's easier to attract people to get out of their houses if they think it's Mister Softee," Conway said. "If you want to get into the hamburger business and thought you could get away with putting up a store with golden arches, wouldn't you do that?"
Lafi Rahman, who owns a Mister Softee franchise, said the impostor Conway saw learned his route. He said the truck would hit his regular stops an hour before he did, but he said he has not seen "Danny" since school vacation began.
Officials: Tortoise seeks lost owner
O'FALLON, Mo., July 11 (UPI) -- City officials in O'Fallon, Mo., said a 30-pound tortoise found in a resident's backyard may go to a zoo if its owner fails to claim it.
Officials said they believe the male African Spurred tortoise, which was found by a resident Tuesday, was a pet that escaped from its home, the St. Louis (Mo.) Post-Dispatch reported.
City spokesman Tom Drabelle said the reptile is very friendly toward humans and enjoys attention, leading officials to believe it was once someone's pet.
"It's just so comfortable with people," Drabelle said.
Drabelle said the tortoise, which is being looked after at the Tender Care Animal Hospital, may go to a zoo if it is not claimed by its owner within a few days.
