PITTSBURGH , July 10 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium announced Thursday that a 25-year-old African elephant at the zoo has given birth to a female baby.
The name and weight of the baby were not released, but zoo officials said the mother, Savannah, and her child were in good health, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Thursday.
"She's doing fine right now," spokeswoman Tracy Gray said of the newborn, who was delivered at about 4:36 p.m. Wednesday after a 21 1/2-month pregnancy.
Another of the zoo's elephants, Moja, is also expected to give birth in the near future.
The zoo has not yet revealed when the newborn pachyderm will be introduced to the public.
"If all goes well with the births, the keepers will watch the bonding processes between mom and baby, as well as the herd, before deciding when to put the babies out on exhibit for the public," the zoo's Web site said. "If the babies are healthy and all goes well, they could come out into the Elephant Yard as early as three days after births."
