PHOENIX, July 10 (UPI) -- A Phoenix man is giving his fiancee a kidney instead of an engagement ring.

Demetria Valenzuela, 22, and Scott Price, 26, are scheduled for transplant surgery Friday, The Arizona Republic reported. Valenzuela, who suffers from the auto-immune disease lupus, has been on dialysis for four years.

The couple met three years ago. Because Valenzuela has to spend nine hours a day undergoing dialysis, they spend evenings watching rented movies instead of going out.

When doctors told Valenzuela to ask relatives to be tested to see if they were potential donors, Price volunteered first and proved to be a match even though he and his fiancee are not genetically related.

"We did pretty much everything together," Price said. "It just didn't seem right to be apart."

Valenzuela hopes to move on with her life. In addition to getting married, she plans to return to school and have a baby.
