LONDON, June 20 (UPI) -- A local government in England has instructed employees to use the term "thought showers" in the place of "brainstorming."

The Tunbridge Wells Borough Council in Kent said memos have been sent to workers instructing them not to say "brainstorming" because it may offend epileptics or the mentally ill, The Telegraph reported Friday.

However, a representative of the National Society for Epilepsy said there was no need for the ban.

"Brainstorming is a clear and descriptive phrase," said the society's Margaret Thomas. "Alternatives such as thought shower or blue-sky thinking are ambiguous to say the least. Any implication that the word brainstorming is offensive to epileptics takes political correctness too far."

The sentiment was echoed by Richard Colwill of the mental health charity SANE.

"This ban goes too far. Few would be genuinely offended by the word brainstorming in the context of council meetings," he said.
