LONDON, June 20 (UPI) -- Bookmakers in Ascot, England, said Ladies' Day at the Royal Ascot horse racing meeting sparked a flurry of betting on the subject of the queen's hat.

The bookmakers said rumors that Queen Elizabeth II would attend Ladies' Day wearing a modern feathered "fascinator" hat sparked bets regarding the style and color of the monarch's headdress, The Telegraph reported Friday.

Bookmaker Paddy Power said the odds of a red hat were slashed from 20-1 to 3-1 after a tide of bets and another bookmaker, William Hill, said an unexpectedly high number of bets were placed predicting the queen would break with tradition and wear a fascinator.

However, the ruler arrived wearing a pastel blue hat by Philip Somerville, topping an outfit that also included a Stewart Parvin dress and coat.
