FERRYVILLE, Wis., June 19 (UPI) -- A Ferryville, Wis., woman shot herself in the foot with a .22-caliber rifle while hunting for a woodchuck in her vegetable garden, authorities said.

Crawford County Sheriff Jerry Moran said 45-year-old Penny Gilman shot herself in the left foot with a bolt-action rifle while waiting for the woodchuck to show its face, the (Madison) Wisconsin State Journal reported Thursday.

Moran said the woman was treated for her injury at Vernon Memorial Hospital and released.

He said an initial investigation into the incident uncovered a problem with the rifle, which deputies confiscated.
