MILWAUKEE, June 11 (UPI) -- A Milwaukee woman said her minivan was totaled when a sewer cover was launched by the water pressure below into the bottom of the vehicle.
Cheri Kitoman was driving to the grocery store Saturday night when she heard what sounded like an explosion, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Wednesday.
"I thought my car for whatever reason was exploding. All I could think of was for the car to stop moving so I could get out of it," Kitoman said.
She said witnesses told her the impact of the 300-pound manhole cover lifted the rear of her van about five feet into the air. The rear wheel detached from the vehicle, along with a section of the axle and suspension. The minivan came to rest on a nearby lawn.
"Had there not been people there watching it to tell me what happened, I don't know that I would have believed it myself," Kitoman said.
A spokesman for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District said the heavy rains that fell during the weekend caused sewer covers to blow off around the city.
"The sewer gets so full, the water has to come out somewhere. It's been happening all over," spokesman Bill Graffin said.
