GREENSBORO, N.C., June 8 (UPI) -- He's a minister, an ex-governor and one-time U.S. presidential candidate and now Mike Huckabee is a life-saver, the benefactor of Huckabee's quick action says.

Huckabee can add that line to his resume -- which also includes former radio announcer, rock guitarist and author -- after performing the Heimlich maneuver on North Carolina state Sen. Robert Pittenger, a Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

Huckabee, who received EMT training in college, sprang into action when he noticed Pittenger appeared to be choking on some food during a breakfast before the North Carolina state Republican Party convention Saturday.

Pittenger said he had been laughing when he choked on a piece of food and instinctively stood up.

"The governor came over," he said, "and did the Heimlich and got the relief."
