OSLO, Norway, June 3 (UPI) -- A magistrate in Oslo, Norway, has ordered a man known as the "cave man" because of his former home in a garbage pile to bathe.

The city magistrate ruled the 54-year-old "cave man," whose name was not released, must bathe now that he is living in a publicly funded nursing home, Aftenposten reported Tuesday.

However, the man, who began living in a garbage pile on the city's university campus after he was expelled from student housing for his poor hygiene in the late 1970s, said he will appeal his case all the way to the Norwegian supreme court.

A lawyer for the man said the city's attempts to force the man to wash himself represents "an extremely serious assault on the private sphere."
