NEW YORK, May 26 (UPI) -- A New York kickball player said he was only joking around by carrying a sword though a Macy's department store on his way to a game when police arrested him.
Lawrence Jackson, 29, was taken into police custody and charged with criminal possession of a weapon Sunday after shoppers reported him to the police for strolling through Macy's with a sword, The New York Post reported Monday.
He was also cited for possession of marijuana.
"He didn't think there was anything wrong with it. He thought it was a toy. But it's not a toy. It's sharp," police officer Richard Perrone said.
Jackson and his eight-month pregnant girlfriend told police the sword was meant as a joke for his kickball team, which is appropriately named the Pirates.
"He wasn't going to hurt anyone. It was all for entertainment purposes," teammate Rick Iturralde, 27, said.
