MINEOLA VILLAGE, N.Y., May 15 (UPI) -- Police in Mineola Village, N.Y., said they have arrested two men who were spotted sawing through aluminum light poles at a village storage yard.
Detective Lt. Raymond Cote, commander of the Nassau County Police Department Third Squad, said officers caught John Baumann and Stephen Freitas sawing through the poles so they could fit the aluminum pieces into a van, Newsday reported Thursday.
Cote said each pole would have fetched about $140 at a junk yard. He said the city paid $1,000 for each pole.
Freitas was arrested on suspicion of felony grand larceny, while Baumann was arrested on suspicion of felony grand larceny, giving officers a fake name and a misdemeanor charge of false impersonation.
