ALBUQUERQUE, May 7 (UPI) -- An Albuquerque man pleading guilty to child pornography charges told a judge that he would like to vote in the New Mexico primary in June.

District Judge Charles Brown was amenable to Patrick O'Hara's request, the Albuquerque Journal reported. But he may not get what he wants because New Mexico law strips convicts of their voting rights when they are convicted or plead guilty, not when they are sentenced or enter prison, a court clerk said.

O'Hara and his son, Timothy, were arrested last year after investigators traced a pornographic message from an AOL chat room to Timothy's computer. Patrick O'Hara, 66, pleaded guilty Tuesday under an agreement that includes a maximum sentence of eight years in prison when he is sentenced in July.

Timothy O'Hara, 42, is scheduled to go on trial in late July.
