Baby eagle born at Va. botanical garden

NORFOLK, Va., April 28 (UPI) -- A botanical garden in Norfolk, Va., has announced the hatching of a baby eagle in a nest at the facility.

A spokeswoman for the Norfolk Botanical Garden said the eaglet was "feeding and active" after it hatched Sunday and the baby bird's mother and father were keeping a close watch on their newborn, the Newport News (Va.) Daily Press reported Monday.

Staff members at the garden said they had watched the egg with baited breath after the eagle couple's first two eggs of the season were determined not to be viable for hatching and the following two were broken by an owl and a third eagle. They said the egg that produced the offspring was laid just before the end of mating season.

"It's exciting when any eaglet hatches," said Amy Dagnall, the garden's public relations manager. "But the waiting for this eaglet has had everyone on pins and needles."

Dagnall said the garden's Web site offers visitors the chance to view streaming video of the baby bird at all times via the park's "Eagle Cam."
