CORAL GABLES, Fla., April 25 (UPI) -- Police in Coral Gables, Fla., said a university student who claimed to have been attacked while jogging caused her own injuries.

Investigators said the 21-year-old University of Miami student cut herself and ripped her own clothing before telling police that was robbed and nearly sexually assaulted while jogging on campus last Friday, The Miami Herald reported Friday.

''They determined the tearing on her shirt was from a rip by hand, not by knife like she claimed,'' Officer Frank Jackson said. "She also said she was thrown to the ground, and she showed us that area, which was muddy and dirty. Something would have showed up on her clothing, but her clothes did not exhibit any of that.''

Jackson said the student admitted to fabricating the story while she was being questioned about contradictions in her report. He said the woman did not offer a motive for inventing the incident.

''We believe this was some sort of mental-health breakdown,'' he said.

Jackson said the department and the university are working together to find counseling for the woman.
