Officers said they arrived Monday at Derdre Rodriguez's home to find the 16-year-old suspect at the mercy of the ice scraper-wielding homeowner, the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported Wednesday.
Rodriguez said she heard noises coming from a room at the back of the house when she arrived home and gave chase after she saw the suspect jump from a rear window and flee across the backyard with jewelry, cell phones and a video game taken from the home. She said she caught up with the teenager after a chase through some of her neighbor's yards -- and then hit him in the head with the scraper.
Rodriguez said she made the suspect carry the items, which he had dropped during the chase, back to her house.
The teen -- who was treated at a hospital for a cut to his head -- has been charged with second-degree burglary.
