Ill. politicos: Phoning, walking don't mix
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., April 3 (UPI) -- Some Illinois politicians say walking, talking, texting and crossing don't mix and want to ban cell phone use while getting to the other side of the street.
State Rep. Ken Dunkin has introduced a bill that would make it a petty offense, punishable by a fine of up to $25, for crossing any street in the state while using a cell phone. The measure is in committee.
While Dunkin has been criticized in some quarters for pushing the legislation, WMAQ-TV in Chicago says he has the support of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, who told WBBM he wants a ban on texting or talking while on the street. White, however, favors the ban only in larger cities, the TV station said.
White also wants statewide restrictions on drivers using cell phones. Currently, Chicago is the only Illinois city that limits cell phone use by drivers, requiring they use only hands-free devices, WMAQ-TV said.
Teen drives 106 mph to 'blow off steam'
MANUKAU , New Zealand, April 3 (UPI) -- A teenager pulled over for driving 106 mph in New Zealand, told authorities he was "blowing off steam."
Police said the 19-year-old had no reason to be driving so dangerously through an intersection with two other people in his car, the New Zealand Herald reported Wednesday.
The officer who clocked the teen late Sunday reportedly was shocked by the unusually high reading.
"He initially thought the radar gave him a mistaken reading because he couldn't see the car. Then he saw it coming, locked it at 178 (106.8 mph) and it came through the intersection so quick that he couldn't even get a registration," said Senior Sgt. Andrew Berry of Counties Manukau East police.
When the officer located the car waiting at a nearby traffic light the driver said he was speeding to blow off steam.
The teen faces charges of driving at a dangerous speed and operating a vehicle recklessly. Authorities have taken possession of his car, the Herald reported.
Loose cows close Scotland road
GLASGOW, Scotland, April 2 (UPI) -- Escaped cows from a crashed cattle truck wandered onto one of the busiest roads in Scotland, causing officials to close it for a time Wednesday morning.
Police closed M73 after a small group of the cows, which were thought to have all been recovered after Tuesday night's crash, wandered back to the road and into traffic at about 4:20 a.m., The Scotsman reported Wednesday.
Strathclyde Police said the road was reopened at about 8:30 a.m. after the three animals on the road were killed. One was hit by a truck and two others were shot by police.
Railway service was affected for about a half hour Wednesday morning after one of the cows walked onto the tracks and was struck by a train. First Scotrail said four trains on the Glasgow to Whifflet route had to be canceled Wednesday but the service was running normally by 7:25 a.m.
Lawyers duke it out in courthouse
PORTLAND, Ore., April 2 (UPI) -- Two lawyers exiting a landlord-tenant court in Multnomah County, Ore., came to blows in a courthouse hallway, witnesses said.
Court officials and witnesses said David Lawrence and Aaron Matusick began shouting at each other after leaving the courtroom and drew a crowd when the confrontation became physical, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Wednesday.
Witnesses said one man slapped the other and the second man responded with a punch to the forehead, but it was not clear which attorney instigated the violence.
Judge Pro-Tem Lewis Lawrence, who is not related to David Lawrence, forced the men to apologize after the fight and told them they would be permanently barred from his courtroom if further incidents take place.
"Both of them should have had enough sense not to engage in that," the judge said.
However, he added: "Isolated incidents are not a good gauge of who someone is."
