CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, March 14 (UPI) -- The Corpus Christi, Texas, Police Department was evacuated after a woman turned in a live hand grenade she found among a relative's belongings.

The headquarters was evacuated after the woman handed the grenade to a marshal and streets near the building were closed, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported Friday.

The marshal took the object outside to await the bomb squad, who took the grenade to a remote location and detonated it.

Bomb squad supervisor Lt. James Brandon said the grenade is believed to have been live.

"When we countercharged it, it went boom," he said.
