LONDON, March 14 (UPI) -- A London man said his plans for a romantic proposal were carried away with the wind when a balloon containing a $12,000 diamond ring was taken by a gust.

Lefkos Hajji, 28, said he had a florist put the expensive jewelry inside a helium balloon as part of his proposal plan, but the balloon and several others he was carrying blew from his grasp right after he left the shop, The Telegraph (Britain) reported Friday.

Hajji said he jumped in his car and followed the balloons for two hours before giving up.

"I couldn't believe it. I just watched as it went further and further into the air," he said. "I felt like such a plonker. It cost a fortune and I knew my girlfriend would kill me."

Hajji said he is still hoping for the ring's eventual return.
