LONDON, March 13 (UPI) -- A British poll suggests that 45 percent of Britons have no familiarity with the Magna Carta.

The YouGov poll of 2,000 Britons found that only 32 percent of the poll's respondents correctly identified that the 1215 document placed limits on the power of the monarchy, The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday.

The poll was commissioned by the British Library.

"British people struggle to put their finger on one of our own defining documents, Magna Carta," said Member of Parliament Jack Straw, lord chancellor and secretary of state for justice. "Magna Carta remains an epochal moment in British history, with a resonance that still lasts today."
