Dogs compete in Texas

TEXAS, Texas, March 9 (UPI) -- About 60 dogs competed this weekend at the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo in events an organizer described as "like the Olympics."

The dogs, which ranged in size from diminutive Jack Russell terriers to large Doberman pinschers, did tricks, dived in water and raced through obstacle courses during the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge, the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman reported Sunday.

"We get to showcase and capture the passion that these people have with their dogs" Jim Allen, manager of experiential marketing in North America for Nestle Purina PetCare, told the newspaper.

The invitation-only event was open to dogs that qualified in open trials.

"It's like the Olympics," Allen said.
